The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) is a non-profit organisation representing an international network of people who are committed to bringing books and children together. Founded in 1953 by Ms.Jella Lepman, IBBY is represented by over78 National Sections worldwide with headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. After a lapse of over 2 decades, Sri Lanka was re-instated as a member in June 2018.
Since then, the Sri Lanka Section has achieved several milestones. Foremost among them is the first-ever Convention on Literature for Children and Youth, held on 4–5 April this year. Following the enthusiastic participation of nearly 150 attendees, IBBY Sri Lanka is now accepting new membership applications.
Those over 18 years of age, belonging to one of the following categories can apply for membership:
- Authors of children’s literature/youth literature
- Illustrators
- Translators of children’s literature/youth literature
- Editors of children’s literature/youth literature
- Publishers
- Teachers (preschool/primary/secondary)
- Academics
- Librarians
- Parents of school-age children
Members are eligible to receive many benefits, including
- Invitations to participate in all local events, including training and awareness programmes.
- Receiving information on all international activities of IBBY.
- Opportunities to participate in international competitions and events related to
literature for children and youth.
- Get featured under Local and International Achievements and Activities of Members in the IBBY Report and Newsletter.
- Permission to use the Member Logo, along with the membership number.
- Receive services of the Good Books Council’s Business Centre for printing/publishing.
- Support for promoting and negotiating copyrights in the international market.
- Opportunities to have one’s work promoted for international co-publishing ventures.
